This year over 40 Canadians attended the iPHA conference in Vienna, on April 27-30! The record crowd of Canucks included teams from large Passive House projects in Ontario and BC, manufacturers, suppliers, designers and builders. As usual, the conference program was packed with information, the latest research and product exhibits. The very fact the conference guide filled a 725-page book gives you an idea of the depth of the program!
We are excited to announce that we have been invited by the City of Vancouver to coordinate an Ice Box Challenge event in Vancouver this summer.
Inspired by a similar event in Brussels, the challenge requires the design and construction of two small structures that will be placed in a public location in Vancouver to create awareness and demonstrate the benefits of high-performance buildings.
It has been an amazing year for the Passive House building community. With hundreds of new projects in design and being built right across the country. This year we launched a project map on our website, so you can now view details and photos of Passive House buildings across Canada, and submit your own. There is fantastic work being done by our members and others advocating for better buildings for people and planet.
This week Passive House Canada members RDH and Red Door Energy Design in Vancouver announced they are merging, combining the Passive House consulting and certification operations of Red Door with RDH Building Science. We’d like to extend our congratulations and look forward to seeing the fruits of their partnership!
As many of you will already know, the Passive House Institute requires you to renew your Passive House Designer or Consultant certification every five years. As of May 2016, there are two ways you can do this.
FPInnovations, the Canadian Wood Council and 475 High Performance Building Supply are seeking to undertake research and explore the opportunities for using wood fibre-based insulation products in Canadian buildings. They are seeking designers, builders and owners of new projects being planned for the near future for participation in this research – particularly, single family and small multi-family residential buildings (other high-performance, non residential structures may also be considered) in the Pacific region, Prairie provinces, South Ontario and Quebec.
We are thrilled to announce we are proud recipients of Vancity’s Community Partnership Program grant – for building industry and consumer outreach projects, and energy and environment initiatives.
The grant has enabled us to launch our new website, which houses more resources for building industry professionals, policy makers and home buyers – with new features like a job board, individual profile pages for members and a forum, all of which are designed to foster and grow the high performance building industry and community.
Congratulations to Passive House Canada member, EuroLine Windows, who have received official Passive House certification for their Series 4700, ThermoPlus PHC windows. They are currently the only company in Canada manufacturing windows that meet the Passive House Standard.
We look forward to seeing more Canadian manufacturers become certified by the Passivhaus Institute over the coming year, growing the local market of high performance building components!

Friday, August 19, 2016 marked a huge success for everyone who has been working hard to promote high performance buildings in Canada. The Government of BC announced its Climate Leadership Plan, highlighting Passive House design and construction as key tool to achieving energy targets in the built environment.
We announced at the North American Passive House Network conference last year that CanPHI West was becoming a national organization. We have members and course conductors across Canada, and it was clear there is strong demand for a professional, national organization to advocate and accelerate adoption of the Passive House high performance building standard in Canada.
It was agreed at our AGM in June 2016 that our name would be Passive House Canada | Maison Passive Canada. Building on our reputation as a trusted and progressive organization, we have changed our branding as well as our name. We believe our new look reflects our values of innovation, science and community, and conveys the powerful simplicity that is behind Passive House design and construction.
Our new website has been designed to better share resources and information, foster community and grow the sustainable construction industry. New features include a project database, job board, a forum for local members, detailed member profiles and an improved resources centre.
Whether you’re an architect, designer, developer, tradesperson, policy maker or a curious homeowner, our website will help you understand the Passive House high performance building standard, connect you with professionals and provide a comprehensive calendar of training opportunities across Canada.
We hope you find the website a useful resource, and to see you at a course or event soon!
