Project Description

The Woodland Drive Passive House project creates sustainable, ground oriented, family sized units that respond to the specific site. The project takes design cues from the neighbourhood context, drawing on both single family homes and pitched roof townhouses found nearby. The proposal incorporates a gable roof form that is skewed and repeated, creating a rhythm for the project.

The building’s simple massing finds a contemporary character in its approach to shading. On the south elevation, a brise-soleil offers shading and weather protection for the openings. On the west elevation, individual shrouds protect glazed areas from direct sunlight, frame views of the adjacent park, and add privacy to each unit.

The Woodland Drive Passive House provides an example of how small-scale, multi-unit housing can contribute to the City’s sustainability objectives and respond to the current Climate Emergency. It is targeting Passive House Classic certification.
