Project Description
Thermal Envelope
Exterior Wall: | The exterior wall design consists of a double stud wall. The interior stud wall is structural, and the exterior stud wall holds up the siding and holds in the insulation. |
Basement Floor/Floor Slab: | Our floor slab design at present, consists of a slab on grade design, 450 mm concrete & sand 203 mm sitting on EPS Type III insulation. The north side of the house is inset into the sloping terrain, and the south side of the house is raised above ground. Our property sits on 65 billion year old meta sedimentary and magmatic bedrock - the Canadian Shield, making excavation a wee bit challenging. Not wanting to blast, we excavated as far as we could scrape, and then leveled with 3/4 clear stone to the high point within the building footprint. This changed our design somewhat, with the slab resting about a meter higher than we had hoped for. Fortunately, the octagonal design meant swapping two of the wedges and redesigning only the entry wedge. A wedge for us, is 1/8th of the octagon. |
