The Cottonwood Passive House sits on a sloping site at the edge of town, enjoying views to the North Saskatchewan River valley. Primary living spaces – bedrooms, living room, kitchen – are oriented toward the south with generous glazed openings to capitalize on passive solar gains. The house can function on one level, allowing the walk-out basement to be converted into a standalone guest suite in the future. The project demonstrates that exceptional energy efficiency is possible with minimal additional investment not only under ideal conditions, but also in a suburban context.
