Project Description
A simple East Vancouver corner lot home designed to fit the lifestyle of our client and their teenage daughter. With an additional laneway house in the backyard, this home has the flexibility to adapts to all the family’s activities. The main floor is an open space perfect for spending quality family time together and entertaining guests. The house also provides plenty of private areas to work, relax and focus on oneself.
Our client and team share a passion for sustainability and believe that Passive House is a simple and smart solution. We are highly motivated to build better and propose designs that are as beautiful as they are high performing. Our primary driver is understanding the site and making choices that best suit the location. This project is no exception and is a direct response to its corner lot. The house has clean lines with a dramatic vaulted stair tower that leads to a large roof deck. The roof deck is a simple solution to increase the amount of outdoor living space. It is a private area that optimizes the views to the mountains without the battle of north facing glazing. In addition, the penthouse takes advantage of the Passive House bylaws by incorporating a window filled office space above the roof lines. This effectively acts as a light well to distribute natural light throughout the home.
The lot is located on a peat bog with unstable soil conditions, we decided to forgo the basement in response to this problem.
Corner Lot Minimal Passive House is a perfect example of good design that addresses the need to reduce our environmental impact without compromising style and comfort.
The design aggressively aims to reduce thermal bridging by eliminating the use of eaves.
