Project Description

This smart design demonstrates that you don’t have to sacrifice aesthetics, comfort, or spaciousness to be both energy efficient and cost effective.

The building’s simple form simplifies construction, eliminates waste, and reduces cost. The south facing windows take advantage of the low winter sun, while rolling cedar louvers manage solar gains in the summer, and add a warm architectural detail. Windows on the north side are placed minimally, allowing for cross-ventilation and natural light. The west facade features an oversized lift & slide patio door, making the generous covered deck area a seamless extension of the open-concept kitchen and living space.

Located in Brackendale, near Squamish, the site is within the flood and debris flow area. The concrete structure of the lower floor raises the living space and utilities above the hazard level and gives the homeowners, a young active couple and their dog, plenty of storage for their outdoor adventure gear.

Built using traditional materials and construction techniques, the building is targeting certification to Passive House Classic in 2021. Click here for more information
