Our first stop will be in Nova Scotia.

In this first webinar, Lorrie Rand, Evan Teasdale and Philip Dennis will present their lessons learned in 3 different projects located in Nova Scotia, Canada.


Lorrie Rand is the co-founder of Habit Studio, the leading authority on sustainable home renovations in Nova Scotia, and co-Director of the ReCover Initiative. She serves on the board of directors for Passive Buildings Canada and hosts the Passivists, a group of designers and builders working on Passive House projects in Nova Scotia. Lorrie has 20 years’ experience leading outstanding residential design projects and consulting on larger projects. Lorrie is a Certified Passive House Designer and has a Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies from the Dalhousie School of Architecture.

  • Lorrie will discuss using Passive House Principles as a design tool on two different houses with tricky rural sites.

Evan Teasdale is a principal at DesignPoint, developing innovative and efficient solutions for municipal infrastructure programs, land development projects, and building designs. He has worked with several local Municipalities to develop sustainability planning policies and infrastructure standards. As a Certified Passive House Designer through the International Passive House Association, Evan applies these fundamental economic and sustainable principles to buildings and beyond.

  • Evan’s project involved the construction of a new single-family dwelling located in Waverley, NS, designed to Passive House building standards. We used this project as a case study exercise to produce a comprehensive cost/benefit analysis to illustrate the economic impact of each design decision. Analyzing multiple layout configurations, assembly types, manufacturers, and varying components we were able to use evidence-based decision making to maximize cost effective design.

Philip Dennis is a professional engineer, with 10-years experience working in the aerospace / space industry. He graduated from Dalhousie University in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has made contributions to the Canadarm2, RADARSAT Constellation, and developed parts & processes for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. He has recently changed his focus from aerospace to Passive House. With nearly 7-years of experience studying, designing, and building with respect to the international passive house standard, Philip Dennis brings a knowledge of passive house that spans a wide-range of perspectives; from engineer, to designer, to builder, and to home owner. His experience is first-hand and practical, and he carries an enthusiasm for sharing what he has learned. After completing his family home Phil started his own business that provides engineering consulting services for high performance buildings.

  • Phil will present his own project: Philip Dennis and his family had plans to build a home in Nova Scotia. With no experience in the construction industry, he studied the passive house standard and obtained his Passive House Designer Certification. He designed, engineered, general contracted, and built a 2,500 ft2 house for less than $150 / ft2. He obtained an airtightness value of 0.15 ACH @ 50 Pa, he used materials from the local hardware store, and designed & installed the ventilation system. In September 2019, with the installation of a PV solar array, the house is now net-zero.
