Many high-performance building teams in Canada are discovering that “comfort” is more complex than predicted. This webinar explores why overheating continues to occur in high-performance buildings and what design teams can do differently. Drawing on case studies and national practitioner interviews, Cara Sloat and Joshua Vanwyck challenge conventional thinking and demonstrate why avoiding overheating requires more than selecting the right components.
You’ll learn:

Cara Sloat is a Mechanical Principal at Hammerschlag & Joffe Inc., leading mechanical design for high-performance and Passive House projects, including 500 MacNab Street in Hamilton. Her work bridges design, data, and human factors, emphasizing occupant comfort, post-occupancy evaluation, and commissioning. Cara focuses on how system design, internal gains, and humidity interact to affect real-world comfort outcomes. She regularly presents on strategies for maintaining thermal resilience and effective mechanical system integration in Canadian climates.
Joshua Vanwyck is a Certified Passive House Designer and Tradesperson, and Principal of JMV Consulting. He has extensive experience in design and construction of large-scale Passive House and Net Zero projects across Canada, specializing in performance modelling, HVAC integration, and commissioning. Josh also teaches building science and practical approaches to constructing high-performance buildings at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). His work focuses on closing the gap between modelled and actual comfort, emphasizing realistic assumptions about glazing, humidity, and occupant use.
