Webinar description

This webinar series will focus on Canadian Projects all across the Country.

Our first stop of 2022 will be in Vancouver.

Join Cody Akira Belton (Morrison Hershfield), Cameron Laidlaw (Morrison Hershfield), Padraig McMorrow (IBI Group), and Solomon Fung (Integral Group) presenting on 825 Pacific Artist Hub: the tallest Certified Passive House Commercial Building in Canada.

This multi-purpose arts and culture hub, owned by the City of Vancouver, will provide affordable artist work and gallery space that is operated by a not-for-profit arts organization. The project was required to pursue Passive House Classic Certification—and use no fossil fuels—to meet the City’s commitment to build all new City-owned buildings in compliance with the City of Vancouver’s Zero Emissions Building Plan. This plan is closely coordinated with the BC Energy Step Code, creating a new level of consistency and predictability across local governments. This provides the construction industry with clear timelines for the implementation of future building codes which helps designers, contractors, and manufacturers develop innovative products and practices, while also preparing the individuals in these crucial roles to update their skills to meet new building performance requirements.

Cody Akira Belton, AScT, PTech, CPHD
Passive House Specialist, Building Enclosure Consultant
Cody is a Passive House Specialist with Morrison Hershfield’s Building Specialty Services team. He has served as a Building Enclosure Consultant for over 13 years, with mature engineering knowledge in building science and experience developing building enclosure design packages for various building typologies, ranging from single-family homes to high-rise buildings. Cody has been a strong Passive House advocate since 2010 and eagerly promotes its benefits to anyone who cares to listen. He has trained product manufacturers and architecture firms transitioning into the high-performance sector, along with providing Passive House consultation and design implementation strategies for new building construction and retrofit projects. Cody is an enthusiastic communicator and champion for Passive House, sharing his passion with various networking groups by delivering presentations on the significant advantages of super-insulated building enclosure design.

Cameron Laidlaw, M.B.Sc., CPHD
Passive House Practice Lead
Cameron is Morrison Hershfield’s Passive House Practice Lead. He has experience on dozens of Passive House projects across North America and internationally. He has served as a Passive House Certifier accredited by the Passive House Institute, Darmstadt. Cameron’s experience in energy & thermal bridge modelling, the Passive House certification process, and consultancy & project management for buildings of all sizes gives him deep insight into developing unique and optimized solutions for achieving the ambitious performance targets of the Passive House standard. Cameron has also worked with numerous product manufacturers to develop Passive House Component-compliant products for the North American market.

Padraig McMorrow, MRIAI Architect (IRELAND), CPHC
Architect and Certified Passive House Consultant
Padraig is a sustainability leader at IBI, guiding projects to deliver greenhouse gas emission reductions, through innovative and cost-effective measures. Following completion of 825 Pacific, he is currently consulting on IBI’s portfolio of larger Passive House buildings including 1075 Nelson, Vancouver, the world’s tallest Passive House and University of Toronto Student Residence. Working in the UK and North America, he aims to share lessons learnt from both continents to broaden IBI’s approach in low carbon building.

Solomon Fung, P.Eng.
Associate Principal at Integral Group
Solomon is a mechanical engineer with over 10+ years of experience in the buildings consulting industry. When first introduced to Passive House principles back in 2015, Solomon saw an opportunity to contribute towards a shift in the way buildings are designed and constructed. He has since collaborated on various commercial and residential Passive House buildings, as well as implemented mechanical Passive House concepts in his designs.
