Mark Bernhardt

Mark Bernhardt, B.Sc. CPHC, CEA – President Bernhardt Contracting

Mark is the President of Bernhardt Contracting Ltd., a licensed builder based in Victoria, BC. In 2012, Bernhardt Contracting built the first Certified Passive House on Vancouver Island, and has since gone on to build or consult on dozens more. In 2019 Bernhardt Contracting also completed the Green Point Project, which aims to be one of the first full pedal Living Building Challenge / Net Positive / Certified Passive Houses in the world.

Mark is also a Certified Energy Advisor and Passive House Consultant, and over the past few years has spent much of his time helping other builders gear up for Step Code and higher performance buildings. He serves on several provincial code committees and chairs the CHBA BC Step Code Task force. ×

Steffen Bertelsen

Steffen Bertelsen is trained as an engineer and has been practicing mechanical engineering in the building industry focussing on high performance structures. His experience includes designing HVAC systems for commercial and residential buildings, commissioning and envelope consulting. Steffen has been working with Bright Buildings based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan specializing in designing mechanical systems for high performance buildings along with Passive House consulting, certification, and education. Steffen has translated this experience to some projects on his farm where he has incorporated Passive House principles into greenhouse design and construction. ×

Evelyne Bouchard

Evelyne Bouchard is a course instructor and board director at Passive House Canada. She is also a practicing architect (OAA & OAQ) and principal at Tandem Architecture Écologique, a small firm dedicated to creating high-performance sustainable projects at all scales through collaboration with like-minded professionals. Evelyne is passionate about the overlap between thoughtful design and technical rigour. She strives to embed Passive House design principles and measurable performance into the creative process to design projects that are durable, sustainable, functional and beautiful.

Kevin D Brown

Kevin has a background in energy efficient design and construction, as well as renovation and heritage building restoration, building to multiple, stringent standards. The completion of a Master of Industrial Design degree, which focused on green design, provided him with the ability to understand design intent, while making sure that the specifications are fit for purpose.
Kevin brings to his work at Nicol Design a background focused on residential construction, specifications of Passive House detailing, review of mechanical systems, and supervision and education of trades. His residential projects include single family homes and green heritage restorations. Kevin’s non-residential projects have included restaurants and heritage sites.
Kevin now runs a Passive House design and consultancy, focusing on new Passive House residential and EnerPHit projects.

Cillian Collins

Cillian Collins is an architect registered in Ireland and an associate with Perkins&Will Architects. He is a Certified Passive House Designer with over 10 years of experience across a variety of project types and scales, including Passive House projects in Canada and Ireland. He is Chair of the Passive House Canada Education Committee, playing a key role in curriculum development, teaching, and advocating for the Passive House standard in Canada.

Frank Crawford

Frank Crawford is a Professional Civil Engineer and a Certified Passive House Designer. He designed, built, and now lives in one of the first Alberta homes built to the International Passive House standard. Through his work as an Energy Efficiency Consultant and the Education Committee lead of Passive House Alberta, he helps others learn how to achieve the benefits of building a highly energy efficient building while minimizing additional upfront costs.

Matthew Dipple

Matthew Dipple P.Eng., Certified Passive House Consultant. Matthew received a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Systems Engineering from the University of Regina in 2014. His capstone project involved designing and modelling a solar district heating system with seasonal thermal storage using TRNSYS. In 2021, Matthew became a Certified Passive House Consultant.
Matthew has experience in building energy modelling, asset management, project management, program development, and contract administration.
Prior to his work with Bright Buildings, Matthew spent five years working for SaskEnergy Incorporated and helped develop and lead SaskEnergy’s Distribution Geohazard Management Program. In 2021, his passion for sustainable buildings and climate action led Matthew to join Bright Buildings.

Graham Finch

Graham is a Principal and Building Science Research Specialist with RDH Building Science Inc. He has a passion for technology and for dedication to making better and more energy efficient buildings. He leads RDH’s building science research group and is actively involved in a wide range of projects from building research studies to forensic investigations, building monitoring, hygrothermal modeling, and new construction design across North America and overseas. Graham has been involved with the design and construction of several passive house projects including houses and larger mixed-use buildings and has lead a number of research and policy studies on the topic. ×

Cameron Laidlaw

Cameron is Director of Technical Services with Passive House Canada. He has experience on dozens of Passive House projects across North America and internationally. He has served as a Passive House Certifier accredited by the Passive House Institute, Darmstadt. Cameron’s experience in energy & thermal bridge modelling, the Passive House certification process, and consultancy & project management for buildings of all sizes gives him deep insight into developing unique and optimized solutions for achieving the ambitious performance targets of the Passive House standard. Susan MacDougall

Susan MacDougall, P.Eng., FEC, CHPC, has worked in the building industry for nearly 20 years and started Focal Engineering in 2015. She is an experienced mechanical engineer, energy modeller, presenter and project manager with a passion for sustainability, which has been her career focus. She is frequently requested to sit on provincial and national codes and standards advisory committees, review other modeller’s work, as well as provide industry presentations. Susan regularly volunteers where she can support sustainability, diversity and inclusion within engineering, including over 15 years of volunteering with Engineers and Geoscientists BC culminating in four years as an elected Councillor, and 6 years with the provincial energy modeling association, IPBSA-BC, among other roles. She has been an instructor with Passive House Canada since 2017, teaching several courses, in particular Understanding & Working with PHPP (120B). ×

Connor Malloy

As a full-time design + build professor, Connor creates immersive, hands-on studio environments to teach his students about best building principles, passive building techniques, and designing a built world that supports people of all abilities. After 15 years leading architectural design + build projects and working with diverse teams, Connor brings a unique interdisciplinary arsenal of design, communication, and fabrication tools to virtual learning spaces and the classroom. Connor is also the co-founder of the international building science competition wallassembly.com which showcases the ideas of young tradespeople. ×

Ed May

Ed May is an Architect and Passive House Consultant. Ed has been an Adjunct Professor at Parsons the NewSchool University in NYC as well an Industry Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ where he directed the 2015 Solar Decathlon program. In addition, Ed teaches with the Passive House Academy the North American Passive House Network, and Passive House Canada and is certified by the Passive House Institute (PHI) in as a Certified Passive House Consultant. ×

Nick McIntosh

Nick is a red seal journeyman carpenter with over 13 years of experience in many different aspects of home building. He started and has been operating a small family-run home-building company since 2014 as well as currently working at SAIT in the Green Building Technologies department as a project coordinator. Nick is a certified Passive house tradesperson and is a big proponent of encouraging tradespeople to get educated in Passivehouse building practices. ×

Michael Nemeth

Michael’s background as a mechanical consulting engineer and green building designer brought him to the realization that, in terms of affordability and sustainability, we need to do a lot better with our buildings. Since that moment of clarity, Michael has been studying the Passive House standard and learning how to best apply its principles, working from a Passive House consultancy in Saskatoon. In April 2015 was named by Corporate Knights magazine as one of Canada’s top sustainability leaders under 30.

Monte Paulsen

Monte Paulsen, EA, CPHC, PHI Building Certifier | Managing Member, Climate Ready Buildings Group, a new consultancy that provides adaptation guidance to policymakers, building owners, and new projects.
Monte is among Canada’s most experienced Passive House professionals. He has led a multi-city Passive House team with RDH Building Science that has consulted on or certified more than 70 projects—totalling 4 million square feet—including homes, offices, affordable mid-rise buildings, and luxury high-rise buildings.
Monte is also a veteran Passive House Trainer who has helped more than 100 professionals earn their Certified Passive House Designer (CPHD) credential. His courses range from a one-day Passive House 101 overview to the multi-day workshop A Pattern Language for Passive House.
Monte was a founding board member and volunteer at the not-for-profit organization Passive House Canada, and previously managed his own Passive House consulting firm, which merged with RDH Building Science in 2016. ×

Lorrie Rand

Lorrie Rand is the co-founder of Habit Studio, the leading authority on sustainable home renovations in Nova Scotia, and co-Director of the ReCover Initiative, a not-for-profit plan to implement deep energy retrofits at scale across Nova Scotia and Canada. Lorrie is committed to promoting high performance building to clients and colleagues. She serves on the board of directors for Passive Buildings Canada and hosts the Passivists, a group of designers and builders working on Passive House projects in Nova Scotia. Lorrie has 20 years’ experience leading outstanding residential design projects and consulting on larger projects. Lorrie is a Certified Passive House Designer and has a Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies from the Dalhousie School of Architecture. She spends her off time in her garden and at the dog park. ×

Sandra Rohler

A registered Architect in Canada and Germany, Sandra has been working on Passive House projects since 2001. She immigrated to Vancouver in 2005 and founded Rohler Passive House Design dedicated to ‘use less’ in 2010. She became a CPHD in 2010 and a CPHT in 2012.
One of the early pioneers in the Passive House movement in Canada, Sandra is a co-founding director of Passive House Canada and initiator of the BCIT Passive House Tradesperson Course.
Sandra holds a degree as a certified joiner and furniture maker through a 3-year craftsperson apprenticeship, prior to becoming a registered Architect in Germany.
This mix of theory, craft, teaching and professional experience has given Sandra a deep knowledge to apply on projects - big picture and detail oriented.
Balancing practical with theory, Sandra is currently working on Passive House projects at Cornerstone Architecture in Vancouver while through Rohler Passive House Design she continues her passion to educate and train professionals and trades in the Passive House Standard. ×

Marine Sanchez

Marine recently joined the specialist Passive House team at RDH Building Science, focusing on large-scale mixed-use projects. Before joining RDH’s Toronto office, Marine was a Principal and Building Science Engineer in one of the English pioneering Passive House consulting companies. Her goal is to deliver high performance buildings at scale more easily and more efficiently, across different sectors. She has a particular focus on the site delivery of high performance buildings (new-build and retrofit), which she demonstrated by leading several site teams unfamiliar with the standard towards Passive House certification throughout her career. Key projects include the delivery of the largest multi-residential certified project in the UK, as well as London’s first EnerPHit residential building. Marine has been an instructor in the Passive House community since 2013, in both the UK and Canada. She is now also supporting the City of Toronto to implement their Zero Emissions Buildings Framework and deliver better performing buildings. ×

Philippe St-Jean

Philippe is a certified Passivhaus designer and instructor, and a LEED BD+C Accredited Professional. He owns a commercial construction company based in Montreal and has worked in the construction industry for over 10 years. Philippe has experience both onsite, as a foreman, and offsite, as a project manager, estimator and construction director. He has recently completed the design and construction of a multi-family Passivhaus project in the densely populated Plateau district of Montreal. Philippe also acts as a sustainable development consultant specializing in the operationalization of sustainable construction practices at the institutional level. His current mandate involves the revision of McGill University’s design standards and construction processes to institutionalize sustainability through measurable results and a self-reinforcing cultural shift. ×

Marcel Studer

Certified Passive House Designer, Certified Passive House Trades Person, Board member and PHC instructor. Marcel is the Principal of Econ Group Ltd, a Vancouver based construction firm with a strong focus on modern, high quality architecture designed to the International Passive House Standard. Holding a Masters Degree in Architecture from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich (Switzerland), Marcel has lived and worked in Canada for the last 15 years. Marcel completed the Passive House Design course in 2011 and has been involved in multiple Passive House projects in and around Vancouver as a project manager, consultant or designer.

Germán Vaisman

Germán Vaisman (www.germanvaisman.com) always believed in a world with low carbon emission, so he geared his architectural career towards Passive House after he heard about it in 2011. He has worked for architectural firms in Argentina, Israel, the US and Canada where he specialized in high performance building enclosures and sustainability. He was trained as an architect and also finished a Masters in Building Science.

He is also a trainer for Passive House Canada and a strong advocate of the Passive House concept every time he has a chance to open his mouth. In 2020 he founded Green Tectonics, a design company specialized in low carbon buildings where he helps individual clients, developers and architects achieve low carbon and high performance standards in buildings.
