CEO Letter – January 2023

I want to begin by wishing our Passive House community a happy new year. I hope you are starting 2023 both relaxed and refreshed. While the new year is fresh, our Passive House Canada team has hit the ground running as we prepare for a number of exciting events and projects we’ll be unveiling over the course of the year.

Our first event major event appearance will take place February 15-16, 2023, when Passive House Canada will participate in Western Canada’s largest building industry forum, Buildex Vancouver. If you are attending, or happen to be in the Vancouver area, we hope you’ll stop by the Passive House Canada booth (booth #819) and say hello. If you would like to volunteer to help staff the booth, please contact us at [email protected]

Passive House Canada Annual Conference 2023

Preparations for the Passive House Canada Annual Conference are underway, and we are very excited about this year’s theme, Future Forward: Innovations in Passive House and Beyond. The three-day conference, May 8-10, 2023, will be held in person in Hamilton, Ontario, as well as virtually. We chose the city of Hamilton as this year’s conference venue to highlight and celebrate the city’s tremendous progress in high-performance building construction and retrofits in recent years.

As in years past, the Passive House Canada Annual Conference will provide a one-of-a-kind forum for industry partners and professionals to chart a path forward towards faster adaptation of low carbon, high performance, and climate resilient buildings. Organized around three distinct tracks, sessions will spotlight key accomplishments and innovations across the building sector, as well as dive into topics of discussion critical for real market transformation, such as the need to drive private investment, target embodied carbon, increase climate resilience, leverage policy and regulation, and support local prefabrication and manufacturing sectors across Canada.

If you or your organization have a project, idea or case study that you would like to showcase to our growing Passive House community, I hope you will consider speaking at the conference. Our call for speakers is now open and everyone is welcome to apply. Early bird tickets are also available here, and more information can be found below.

I hope to meet you at our conference in May.

Lake Superior Discovery Centre

Congratulations to Parks Canada for its commitment to Passive House in the design of the Lake Superior Discovery Centre, to be located in Nipigon, Ontario. The Discovery Centre is an anchor of the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area. A request for builders to qualify has been posted to Canada Buys (solicitation number is WS3817235738).

Passive House Canada was please to work with Parks Canada and provide an in-depth series of webinars that introduced local builders and designers to Passive House building principals. A number of participants have taken our trades course in preparation, we hope, to bid on the project. PHC stands ready to support any contractor who needs passive house training.

Environmental Credits & Net Zero

PHC is pleased to offer you a complimentary copy of the Consumer Council of Canada’s Environmental Credits & Net Zero discussion paper. If you’re interested in improving your understanding about how environmental credits may contribute to ‘net-zero emissions, I recommend you give this report a read. It’s written from the consumer’s perspective by a former federal auditor who now sits as a volunteer Board member on the organization. To claim your free copy of this e-publication, visit the Council’s website here. There is a limited number of copies available, so download today. The activation code is HBVG-HGSG-PXLL-XGXV.
