SUMMARY:Certified Passive House Designer/Consultant Exam (120EX) ONLINE - 23 OCT 2026
DESCRIPTION:There are two methods of becoming a certified Passive House Designer or Consultant: through submission of a certified Passive House project\, or by passing the standardized international exam.  The exam is offered by Passive House Canada in cooperation with PHI. Certified Designers and Consultants will be listed on our website\, as well as the international database. For information on certification via project design and documentation please see PHI’s Project Qualification page. \nThe exam is thorough and time-limited\, and it is not recommended that you attempt the exam without first taking courses 120A\, 120B and 120C offered by Passive House Canada. \nExam details\nThe exam is one and a half hours (90 minutes) in length. The Certified Passive House Designer/ Consultant exam will be conducted in an online format. This format is subject to change according to the Passive House Institute policies. \nThere will be a 60 minute required tech check meeting a few days before the exam date. Details will be emailed directly to registrants. \nParticipants must supply a valid PHPP registration number in order to write the exam. PHPP can be purchased on our website here. Please allow at least 1-2 business days for processing.  \nInformation on examination regulations and detailed learning targets can be found on the PHI website. Briefly\, the exam will include material on: \n\nPassive House definition\nPassive House criteria\nThermally insulating envelope\nAirtight building envelope\nTransparent exterior components\nPassive House ventilation\nHeat supply system\nHot water generation\nSummer comfort and space cooling\nElectrical energy\nEnergy balancing\nEconomic efficiency calculation\nInvitation to tender\, construction management and quality assurance\nBuilding user information and support\nRetrofitting with Passive House components (EnerPHit)\nCalculations\, quantities\, units\n\nThe examination is marked by Passive House Canada and then sent to PHI for second review. Participants are notified directly via email by PHI approximately 4 weeks after the exam of whether they passed or failed. \nPHI will issue either a Passive House Designer certificate or Passive House Consultant certificate to successful participants\, depending on educational qualifications. To acquire the Passive House Designer designation\, substantiated educational qualifications are required\, which allows the applicant to independently design buildings or technical building systems. A copy of a document providing evidence of this qualification (degree\, master craftsman’s certificate or similar documents\, translated into English if applicable) must be provided to Passive House Canada at the time of writing the exam; we will forward this proof to PHI. Examination participants whose qualifications do not meet the specified requirements\, or who do not provide any proof of their qualification\, will receive the Passive House Consultant certificate. For more information on the distinction between “Designer” and “Consultant”\, please visit the PHI webpage Certified Passive House Designer vs. Consultant.

SUMMARY:Control of Air: Air Barrier Systems and Material Selection (200C) ONLINE - OCT 2026
DESCRIPTION:If you are a designer or builder who wants to achieve a high-performing\, durable Passive House building\, you need to understand control layers. Control layers are materials and systems of materials that are specially designed\, selected\, and detailed to control water\, vapour\, and air. They are placed throughout the building\, from the roof\, walls\, and floor to the below-grade enclosure assemblies\, details\, and interfaces. They consist of membranes and other materials typically described as air barriers\, vapour barriers\, and water-resistive barriers\, or collectively as critical barriers. \nThe design\, selection\, and placement of control layers can be challenging. Given the highly insulated nature of passive house buildings\, even small mistakes in water and air control can create problems. Simply adding insulation to traditional wall and roof assemblies is risky\, so air and vapour control practices must be adjusted to consider the assembly layers and details. Therefore\, to design and construct effective passive house buildings\, designers and builders must understand the building science behind control layers. \nPart 3 will cover wall air control/air barrier systems and materials. \nThis 2-hour session will include 90 minutes of live web-based instruction and demonstrations plus a 30-minute Q&A.

SUMMARY:Site Supervisor (250) ONLINE - OCT 2026
DESCRIPTION:If you already understand the fundamentals of Passive House construction — whether through hands-on experience on Passive House sites or by completing a Certified Passive House Tradesperson course — you may be ready to deepen your expertise. The Passive House Site Supervisor (SiteS) course is designed to expand your skills in coordinating and successfully executing complex or large residential and non-residential Passive House and EnerPHit projects on-site. \nCreated for Certified Passive House Tradespeople\, this master class broadens your knowledge of the professional roles and construction activities essential to delivering high-performance buildings. It strengthens your ability to manage and oversee work on Passive House construction sites and provides practical insight into the decisions that influence quality and performance throughout the build. Through real-world examples and practical guidance\, participants gain a clear understanding of the responsibilities\, skills\, and decision-making processes involved in carrying out Passive House building design on-site. \nCourse content includes construction management principles\, the handling of both opaque and transparent building-envelope components\, airtightness strategies\, and mechanical services—all examined from the perspective of site supervision. The course also explains how various construction-site factors affect the overall building energy balance in PHPP\, enabling participants to recognize and manage the details critical to achieving Passive House performance. \nPlease note: This SiteS certification can only be used in conjunction with a valid Passive House Tradesperson (CPHT) certificate. Additional certificates (such as SiteS) do not have to be renewed themselves. They are automatically renewed by the renewal of the main CPHT certificate. This new “add-on seal” is used in conjunction with a valid “main seal” (Tradesperson seal). Those without a CPHT certification can still benefit from the knowledge in this course\, you just cannot write the exam for CoVer certification without a CPHT designation.
